Okay, this isn’t the most glamorous wedding planning topic we could write about—but it’s one of the questions we answer most often. If you’ve been wondering, what is event insurance, you’re not alone. It can feel like just another item on an already long wedding to-do list, but understanding the basics now can save you stress later.
The good news? Event insurance doesn’t have to be confusing. Here’s what you need to know in just a few minutes.

Wedding event insurance is a policy that helps protect you financially if something unexpected happens before or during your wedding. There are two primary types of event insurance, and they each serve a different purpose.
The first thing to know is that most wedding venues require liability insurance, so this isn’t usually an optional expense. The second is that cancellation or postponement insurance may be worth considering depending on your specific circumstances.

Liability insurance is the type of coverage most venues require, and it’s exactly what it sounds like—it provides protection if someone is injured or property is damaged during your wedding.
Many policies also include liquor liability coverage, which is one of the biggest reasons venues require couples to purchase it before the event. While no one plans for accidents, having this extra layer of protection helps give both you and your venue peace of mind.

Cancellation or postponement insurance is typically optional, but it can be a smart investment for some couples.
We often recommend considering it when there are multiple people contributing financially to the wedding. If your event has to be postponed or canceled for a covered reason, this type of policy may help recover some of the nonrefundable expenses.
For example, if the groom breaks his femur the week of the wedding and postponement becomes necessary, some deposits and financial losses could be covered by filing a claim—assuming the reason is included in your policy.
It’s also important to understand what isn’t covered. While policies vary, widespread events like a global pandemic generally are not considered covered causes for cancellation or postponement. Always read your policy carefully so you understand exactly what protections you’re purchasing.

This is where many couples start feeling overwhelmed. Insurance quotes often include terms like “aggregate liability,” and it’s easy to wonder if you’re selecting the right option.
Our best advice? Start with your venue contract.
Many venues clearly state the exact liability limits they require, making it easy to choose the correct policy. If your contract doesn’t specify the coverage requirements, don’t guess—reach out to your venue and ask. They’ll be happy to tell you exactly what they need.

Event insurance isn’t the most exciting part of wedding planning, but it’s one of those details that can protect both your investment and your peace of mind.
As planners, we believe in helping couples understand the “why” behind every planning decision—not just checking boxes. Once you know the difference between liability insurance and cancellation insurance, the process becomes much less intimidating (and a whole lot easier to tackle).
