Choosing wedding party attire can feel like one more overwhelming decision on an already full planning checklist, but it doesn’t have to be. With a thoughtful approach and a little planning, you can create a look that’s cohesive, comfortable, and perfectly complements your wedding day. As wedding planners, we’ve helped countless couples coordinate attire from across the country, and we’ve learned a few tricks that make the process much easier.

One of our biggest pieces of advice is to choose your wedding gown first. Once you’ve found the dress, you’ll have a much clearer vision for everything else.
The silhouette, fabric, and overall style of your gown will naturally guide your bridesmaids’ dresses. From there, you can select suits or tuxedos that complement (not compete with) the bridal party. Finally, take one last look at everything together. If the groom’s attire feels disconnected from your gown, consider small adjustments like changing the tie, jacket, or boutonniere to create a more cohesive look.
Working in this order keeps every decision intentional and helps your entire wedding party feel like they belong in the same story.

This might be our favorite planning hack…
Head to your local hardware store and pick up paint sample cards.
Seriously!
Trying to describe “the perfect sage green” or “dusty blue with gray undertones” over text messages rarely goes well. Paint samples provide an exact color reference that everyone, from your wedding party to your florist, can use.
Grab a handful of matching samples to share with bridesmaids, groomsmen, and even vendors. Since they’re free, don’t be afraid to stock up. It’s a simple trick that eliminates guesswork and keeps everyone on the same page.

Comfort should always be part of your design plan.
If you’re planning a winter wedding, floor-length gowns and heavier suit fabrics will keep everyone warm. Planning a July celebration? Lightweight fabrics and breathable suit options will help your wedding party stay comfortable throughout the day.
Your attendants will thank you, and so will your future self, when you look back at photos of a wedding party that looks relaxed, happy, and comfortable instead of shivering…or battling summer heat. (We’ll spare you the visual of sweat stains.)
When your wedding party feels good, it shows in every photograph.

The finishing touches are where your wedding style really comes to life.
Think beyond matching jewelry or ties. Instead, use accessories to reinforce the overall design of your celebration.
Hosting a modern farmhouse wedding? Matte black jewelry or cufflinks can echo the venue’s finishes. Planning a mid-century modern celebration? Colorful ties, socks, or pocket squares can introduce playful personality. Love the scalloped edge on your reception china? Look for jewelry or accessories that subtly repeat that detail.
These intentional design choices create a wedding that feels thoughtfully curated from beginning to end without feeling overdone.

One of the biggest misconceptions about wedding party attire is that everything has to match perfectly.
Instead, focus on coordination. When fabrics, colors, and styles complement one another while allowing each person to feel comfortable and confident, the result is timeless, natural, and authentic.
At the end of the day, your wedding party is there to celebrate alongside you. Thoughtful attire choices simply help everyone look and feel their best while supporting the overall vision you’ve worked so hard to create.
